Perennials

We have long been renowned for our vast selection of perennials.  Our collection is among the largest in the province and features both classic perennials or traditional favourites, as well as more unusual, much quirkier and seldom seen but sublime perennials.  Every year, many of our regular perennial patrons want something new and different, so we are dedicated to providing delightful new perennials.

Like People - Perennials Are Not All the Same

Perennials are like many of the people you know - many of  them like the sun, some prefer the shade, some have a rather delicate personality and others are remarkably resilient.  Many people flourish best in a certain environment - a small condo downtown, a large house in the country, a bungalow in the suburbs or a cottage near the lake.

Perennials also flourish best in certain environments- some covet dry soil, some prefer clay soil, others enjoy moist soil and some can handle rather sandy soil.  And while many perennials are more comfy in locations sheltered from strong winds by a hedge, fence, wall or tree, others can withstand more exposure to the elements.  We have perennials for all such environments.  Here are just a few samples from each category.

Growing Environment for Perennials:

It's true that providing an ideal growing environment for particular perennials, dramatically improves the odds that they will be healthier, happier, and less prone to pest problems or disease dilemmas.  But unless you have lots of spare time and spare cash, don't try to make your soil match the growing conditions of the plants you like.  It will involve much less labour and far less money, if you choose plants that can handle the growing environment you already have at home.  The levels of light, the type of soil, and the amount of exposure in your perennials beds, are really just guidelines that should help make it easier to choose the best perennials for you.

Enrichment:

No matter what kind of soil you have, all soils benefit from enrichment.  Plants growing in enriched soil are like plants that have been given a comfy luxury bed instead of a ragged, worn out sleeping bag.  Enriched soil helps plants grow stronger, and helps them bloom better, bigger and longer.  We still carry conventional fertilizer, but we are increasingly dedicated to featuring a much larger selection of eco-minded, earth friendly, organic nutrients.  So when you visit us, explore all of the soil amendment options available here.

Knowledge:

Some customers arrive knowing everything pertinent about the perennials they seek.  Others are uncertain or perhaps are purchasing perennials for the very first time.  If you have any questions or want more information about a particular perennial or the most pleasing environment for it, do not hesitate to ask us for advice or information.  Our staff includes some individuals who specialize in perennials and they will be pleased to advise and assist you.  In gardening, as in life, the right information can become a powerful thing.
